Welcome to the Phantoms Volleyball Club of Australia

Centre, 6-8 June 1998.

The Geelong Division 1 Mens team (with Phantoms Jon
Collyer,Trevor Davis and Aaron Krahe) went through the
tournament undefeated without dropping a set !! They
defeated Bairnsdale 15-8, 15-10, 15-2 in the final.
The Division 2 Mens team (with Phantoms Ian Blanchonette,
Tony Veitenheimer, Jim Trevaskis, Wilko Kammerer,
Rod Christy, Ralph Dew and Adam Cracknell) had only one
loss during the round robin competition, but went down
to Horsham in the final 15-17, 15-12, 15-10, 15-9.
The Geelong Divison 1 Women (with Phantom Cheryl
Moore) came a creditable 5th. The Bellarine Division 1
Womens team (with Phantom Lisa Krahe) went down to
Bendigo in the final 10-15, 5-15, 15-10, 15-5,
15-13. Congratulations to all 12 Phantoms who
represented Geelong and Bellarine at the Championships.

GAVA Autumn Season Finals, Leisuretime Sports Centre,
Sunday 14 June 1998.

The Phantom Volleyball Club made it double glory with
wins over Syrena in Division 1 and Syrena Legends in
Division 2. The Division 1 final was a high quality contest
with the recent form shown by all in the Country
Championships continuing. Phantoms took the first set
15-7 and had stamped their authority on the second with
a lead of 11-7 when a Syrena player rolled his ankle and
went down. With no subs (but still able to continue under
the by-laws) they conceded defeat. The Phantoms went
through the season undefeated and Trevor Davis won the
"Best and Fairest" award for Division 1. The Division 2
final went the distance, with the Elders holding on to
win 15-11, 15-12, 15-13. The Elders were undefeated
in Division 2. In Division 3 Nads defeated Mongerels
3-1, 15-6, 15-6, 14-16, 15-3. A great time was had
by all at the post-GF bash at The Queen of the West Hotel.

Mixed Grand Final, Leisuretime Sports Centre,
Tuesday 14 July 1998.

Congratulations to the Phantoms Division 1 mixed team on
their win in the grand final. A tough 5 setter was
played with the Phantoms coming out on top to complete
the triple over Syrena for the season. Congratulations to
Cheryl, Tracy, Sharon and Bianca on their first taste of
Phantom glory. We also welcome a second Phantoms mixed
team into Division 2 and hope that they can continue
the Phantom success in the future.

Victorian Volleyball League Grand Final, MSAC,
Saturday 5 September 1998.

The Geelong Mens Division 1 State League team
finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder,
having won 11 matches and lost only three. Unfortunately,
they lost to Latrobe University in the GF 2-3 (11-15,
10-15, 15-12, 15-8, 12-15). Well done to all who played.

National Titles, Springers,
September 20-25 1998.

Jon Collyer, Trevor Davis, Aaron Krahe and Brock
Andrews played in the Victorian Country team at the
1998 National Titles. Vic Country defeated Tasmania
and North Queensland, took a set off NSW and
lasted 90 minutes against a very strong Vic Metro team.
Coach Dave Berry was extremely pleased with the
efforts of the team.

GAVA Spring Season Finals, Leisuretime Sports Centre,
Sunday 11 October 1998.

With Trevor Davis on the bench with back problems
and Brock Andrews AWOL, it didn't look good for the
Div 1 team. But thanks to a great team effort, the
Phantoms pushed Syrena all the way to eventually go
down 2-3 in a memorable Grand Final. In the Div 2
final the Phantom Elders were also depleted by injury.
Ralph Dew was on crutches, Steve Clarke needed a jab
in his arm to get on the court and Peter Kuklych
hobbled on after "doing a knee" the previous weekend.
In a gutsy display the Elders went down 1-3 to
Vostok Shadows. Jim Trevaskis won the Div 1 best and
fairest, while Rob King came third in the Div 2 count.
A good time was had by all at Trev's place after the games.

Wimmera Games, Horsham,
21-22 November 1998.

A large contingent of Geelong Phantoms descended on
an unsuspecting Horsham for the club's second annual
pilgrimage to the Wimmera Games. Armed with a
mini-bus and a good knowledge of which pubs not to go
to, both teams swept (almost) all before them, losing
only one match each in the preliminary rounds. Wins in
the cross-overs sent both teams into the Grand Finals.
Unfortunately, both teams went down; the women 1-3
to USC Lions in the Div 2 final and the men by the
same margin to Heidelberg in the Div 1 final. Also,
Maureen Hanlon won the womens Div 1 best and
fairest (playing for Geelong). A great time was had
by all - same time next year!!

Da guys ... Scott, Jim, Wilko, Ian, Jon, Aaron, Trev.

Da girls ... Cheryl, Natt, Leena, Sharon, Jo, Tracy, Lisa.
