Welcome to the Phantoms Volleyball Club of Australia

Warrnambool 2002.

Phantoms Men Div 3 had 7 players being Aaron Krahe,
Jon Collyer, Tony Vietenheimer, Rod Christy, Wilko
Kammerer, Dave Hanks & Adrian Dingley. The team had
very consistant games during the rounds, defeating Horsham,
Phantoms Ballarat, Melbourne Spikers, Warrnambool,
Wolfpack & ESSG Scorpions. The guys played so well,
they made it through to the final on Monday against
Wolfpack. They played good steady volleyball and
used their experience well to take out the title. An added
bonus with Aaron Krahe winning the Best & Fairest,
just pipping our other favorite Phantom son - Jon Collyer,
and was he spewin!

Phantoms Bellarine Women Div 1 were represented by
Lisa Krahe, Cheryl Moore, Leena Renkauskas, Lyn Edlich,
Heather Wells, Debbie Campbell, Vera Rava & Kim Puckey.
We played Heidelberg and Monash Uni on the Saturday
with both being fairly easy wins. Sunday was a different
standard altogether with the team having to work hard
against a challenging Big, Bad & Ugly - we came out
with a well deserved draw on the positive side - the
negative was Leena being taken to hospital by Sally
(Hanksy's other half) with a broken hand. You can't say
she doesn't put in - Leena swung at a ball near the referees
stand and the rest is history. We played Falcons in the
last game, ensuring we didn't have to play cross-overs
that night. We met Falcons again in the final on Monday
only to lose 3-1 to a much younger side.

Australian Volleyball Masters Ballarat 2002.

Phantoms Men 30+ team consisted of Aaron, Jon, Ian,
Tony, Dave, Scott, Neil Ham and Greg Tulloch with
Dave Berry as coach. Our first game was against last
year's winners in Canberra - Renegades. Renegades were
suffering from a few injuries to key players, so that made
our game a lot more competetive and suprisingly we came
out on top playing some very good volleyball. Later that
day we came up against South Adelaide who, with Paul
Grimmet from Monash, made the game a spectacular one
to watch with South Adelaide the victors. Saturday we
played Duck Nuts who are a State League side from
NSW who had changed their name from South Sydney
Squirrels to hopefully change their luck - no such luck,
we won! Only one game as Aaron, Jon & Scottie had to
make a mad dash back for Wilko's wedding (on ya Wilko).
Sunday had us play Wallabies (35+) only because there
were 2 teams in this age group - this was a must win
game for us to ensure we made the Gold Medal playoff - we
won. Last game was Oldphins (35+) - this team had not
won a set all weekend and we came out easy victors
to play South Adelaide in the Gold Medal round. This
was a rough and tumble game with players giving it their
all. 2 South Adelaide players literally controlled their
teams attack and were too good in the end winning. Still
a great result for Phantoms Volleyball.

Phantoms Women 30+ combined with a few of the
Mixed team and older age group to form a competitive
team. Lisa, Cheryl, Vera, Julie Dew, Anne Kuklych,
Margie Foot, Sue Cooper (Monash) and Irene Petkovsek
(Mornington). We had not had any trainings together
and came up on Friday against Belles and Golden Girls
(35+). Both of these games would be our hardest
with both teams having big hitters. We won a tight 2-1
against Belles and lost 1-2 against Golden Girls. Still a
great effort as most of Golden Girls were former
Wallabies of the 80's and 90's - a formidable team.
Saturday had us playing Sydney Tigers (25+) and we
won this game 2-1, Lisa had to leave at 1-1 to head
back to Geelong for Wilko's wedding (Damn you Wilko).
Sunday saw us having to play AN Moos and Renegades
(25+). Both games were good steady games for us, being
victorious in both and ensuring we made the final. We
played Belles in the final on the Monday - a big hitting
game with Phantoms doing well in the first set until Vera
had a cramp in her calf and could not take the court
for the rest of the game. We lost the first 2 sets, came
back in the 3rd and only just lost the 4th. Still a very
good effort considering 3 of our players should have
been playing Mixed or in the 40+ age group - you know
who you are girls, and a big thankyou to Sue and Irene
for playing with us and making the 4 days memorable!

World Masters Games 2002
Melbourne - 30+ Women.

Our first World Masters as Phantoms. Our players are
Cheryl, Jo, Lisa, Vera - and we welcomed Deanne
Semmens - ex Victorian Junior Rep and Fairhills State
League Honours player, Elizabeth Nadolski - ex Victorian
Junior Rep and State League Geelong/Bellarine player,
Helen (Bill) Jones - Yarra Rangers State League
Honours player, Shireen Longley - ex Bendigo player
now Geelong player, Tania Malishev - Dandenong Cossacks
State League Div 2 player, Trina Tweedie - ex
Victorian Rep & Ballarat Rep, Geelong/Sisu State League
player. We had a nervous start against Gippsland Gals,
but came through with a good win 2-1. Our games against
North West Pumas, Wolfpack, Northern Territory
Geckos and Sydney Tigers were all good winning 3-0.
We had played all 5 games in the rounds and won all to
finish top of our pool. This was to put us into the Gold
Medal playoff, however, the organisers felt they needed
to add an extra game late on the second last day and
decided to include crossovers between the 2 pools. Our
crossover was against Belles and our team had a hard
game of it, trying to overcome our mindset that we were
going to play off for a medal previously - we lost 0-2
in a tough game. Now a difficult task to now play
another game in which we could end up with no medal
at all. In the other crossover, Sydney Tigers decided
to forfeit against Frankston Sharks to then face us in
the Bronze Medal playoff. A tough game in which we
came out a set each and we ended up winning the 3rd
set in a tight one from a terrific sharp hit across
court by Vera to win the Bronze!

Horsham 2002 - Div 1 Women.

We were coached by Jon and our team consisted of
Cheryl, Deanne, Jo, Leena, Lisa, Lyn, Tania - and we
welcomed Jodie McDonald - Geelong Representative.
A solid tournament where we met Burgercons (a
combination of Heidelberg & Falcons players) in the final.
We didn't play as well and unfortunately lost 0-3.
